The scoop on baby sign language

Since we first found out we were going to be parents, my husband has been keen on teaching our baby sign language. The fact that C’s school employs this communication tactic with the kiddos was also a big plus for us when it came to choosing the right childcare arrangement.

I have been on board with sign language since the topic first came up at our house, but have not spent as much time learning and practicing as hubby. Imagine my surprise when C signed to me for the first time a few weeks ago! It’s so amazing to know we can communicate without words, and she’s now a common user of signs like “more,” “all done,” and “dada” (all that hard work payed off!). According to BabySignLanguage.com, some the pluses of signing with your little are huge:

  • Developmental benefits like speaking sooner, and learning faster due to sign language acting as a bridge to a full vocabulary
  • Studies have shown that babies who sign oftentimes do better at school
  • Being able to communicate with baby and see the world through her eyes contributes to the strengthening of your bond

Pretty cool, huh! If you’re interested in getting started with basic baby signs, BabySignLanguage.com is an awesome resource. You can also purchase a starter kit like this, get the BabySign app for your iPhone/iPad, or just try and find some basic instructions online for free.

Do you use sign language with your kiddos?

Hi there! I studied sign language (ASL) in college and used it with my kids. While the baby sign language was helpful, it’s been a bigger blessing to be able to communicate things (I need to use the restroom, be quiet, and calm down) without having to talk. People think my kids are really well behaved… they just don’t know I discipline in secret wherever we go! :)

we did baby sign with our son. He was a bit of a late speaker and being able to communicate his needs without the exact words was really helpful. Or adding the sign to an attempt at a word meant we got the gist much faster. I also love that we could talk at a distance. once at the zoo i saw some giant bunnies and i shouted to him and did the bunny sign and he came running, knowing exactly what i’d said. He’s three and a bit now and still uses the sign for hide and seek and orange. Its very cute.
